Darklight: The Future Is Now
Less than a month to go!
That's right, we can't believe that it's almost Darklight time, it feels like only yesterday that we were finalizing the last few events for this year's festival.
No, wait, that WAS yesterday.
The Darklight programmes have hit the streets, and we're pretty darned happy with them. You'll find all the info on our spiffy new website, too:
www.darklight.ie
It's a work in progress. But then we're all works in progress, boss. There you'll find info about all this year's exciting Darklight events: Crispin Glover, Paddy Considine, Warp Pictures, Chris Doyle, The Documentary Doctor, Vice Magazine, our 4-Day Movie Challenge, DATA, the first Irish screening in 25 years of Tron (we're pretty stoked about that one), the 15 Second Film Festival and much, much, MUCH more... But don't take our word for it. Check it out for yourself.
Today, however, we want to tell you about our exciting Darklight '08 Workshop And Symposium Programme.
€50 scores you an all-access pass to ALL of these events.
Right now, the day by day line-up looks a little like this...
FRIDAY 27 JUNE SYMPOSIA
DIGITAL WATCH:
DARKLIGHT AND DIGITAL MEDIA FORUM PRESENT A PAIR OF CUTTING-EDGE SYMPOSIA EXPLORING THE DIGITAL MEDIAVERSE.
SYMPOSIUM: LETTING IT ALL HANG OUT: PRIVACY VS. PUBLICITY IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Friday 27 June Film Base, 10 - 11.30 am
For a new generation of 'digital natives' privacy is no longer a requirement. Web 2.0 has brought with it a transformation in how we view the need for privacy and engage with the public realm ? but at what cost? The discussion will be prefaced by a keynote address from Daniel J. Solove, Associate Professor of law at the George Washington University Law School, and the author of The Digital Person: Technology and Privacy In The Information Age. Chaired by solicitor and digital rights expert Caroline Campbell, the panel will also feature Irish blogging guru Damien Mulley.
SYMPOSIUM: WEB 3.0: WHERE NEXT FOR THE INTERNET?
Friday, FilmBase, 12 - 1.30 p.m.
This panel discussion will look at what is the next stage of development for the World Wide Web - and it's parent, the internet. Cloud Computing, Rich Media applications, Mobile internet, 3D internet, Semantic web, The Grid, wirelessly-enabled appliances and sensors... All these concepts will be analysed, discussed and explained and given context for the creative community and general public alike. Chaired by Anton Mannering (Digital Media Forum), participants will include Bill McDaniel (DERI, Galway) Chris Howard (Head of 3D Internet, IBM) and Joe Dromgoole (Put Place).
INTRODUCING... VIRTUAL CINEMA:
SYMPOSIA AND SCREENINGS TO CELEBRATE THE LAUNCH OF THE IRISH FILM BOARD/WILDLIGHT VIRTUAL CINEMA INITIATIVE - A NEW SCHEME FOCUSED UPON THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH-QUALITY IRISH SHORT FILMS THAT ARE SUITED TO THE NEW FORMS OF DIGITAL VIDEO CONSUMPTION.
SYMPOSIUM: THIS IS THE HOUR: NOT JUST ANOTHER LOW-BUDGET FILMMAKING SEMINAR
The Light House, 2.00 p.m.
Darklight are delighted to welcome Warp X head honcho Barry Ryan to the festival as part of our Warp strand; Warp X posits a new model for the British Film Industry ? a sustainable digital studio driven by creative talent and a dynamic business model that rewards everyone involved in the films. With budgets available for independent film steadily decreasing, what better time to get together and talk about the agonies and ecstasies of low budget? Participants will include Darklight Director Nicky Gogan (Still Films), Documentary Doctor Fernanda Rossi and Barry Ryan (Head Of Production, Warp X).
SYMPOSIUM: DECODING VIRAL MARKETING
The Light House, 4.00 p.m.
Wikipedia puts it thusly: 'Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.' The successful viral marketing campaign is the Holy Grail of twenty-first century media... How to capture lightning in the virtual jar? Chaired by Steve McCormack (Wildwave), the panel will include Fionn Kidney (Strategem) and Irish internet phenomenon Sophie Merry (Bandy Toaster).
