Darklight Festival is now seeking submissions for its 2009 event, which takes place from October 8-11 2009. The deadline for submissions for Darklight '09 is 5pm on Friday, July 3rd 2009.

Since its inception in 1999, Darklight Festival has brought new and exciting work to Irish audiences through cinema, exhibition and performance and to an international audience via the Internet and an annual Touring Programme.

Darklight is Ireland's premier festival for filmmakers, animators and artists whose work explores the convergence of art, film and technology.

Clampdown, in association with Darklight Festival, are running an open competition for video pitches to coincide with the imminent release of Arveene and Misk's debut single 'Hells Bells'.

The winning pitch will be made into a video and backed by an extensive PR campaign ensuring high profile TV Spots. The final video will also be screened at this year's Darklight Festival, 8 - 11 October 09.

Open call for artists to perform at Crewger events nationwide

Are you a comedian, filmmaker, writer, painter, singer, actor or performer? Are you interested in showcasing your work locally in conjunction with Ireland's largest growing online network of artists?

Crewger, Ireland's new collaborative film-making website, is continuing its successful run of events for local artists with 2 new dates announced.

* Friday May 8th, The Shed, 8a Henrietta Lane, Dublin 1
* Sat June 13th, Abbeyleix, Co Laois

Whats it all about?

Crewger is all about empowering artists. We are building a strong network of artists from all backgrounds nationwide, and providing them with the contacts and the resources they need to develop projects and find their audience.

The aim is to provide a social networking, project management and exhibition service for all artists, from students to established names.

What's different about Crewger?

The difference is, YOU control the content

The site is currently in its prototype stage and we are working hard on a new site to be launched in September, designed specifically for filmmakers. This network will be expanded into all of the arts in 2010.

Who can perform at the events?

This event is designed to showcase the work of all artists in Ireland at a local level. As such we are open to any and all forms of artistic expression. If you have something to say, we want to hear it.

How do I get involved?

To put yourself forward for the event, email brendan@crewger.ie with your name and contact details, some background information, details of the piece you would like to showcase and confirmation that you will be available on the above dates.

Tania Goryucheva is the organizer, researcher, lecturer in the field of digital (new) media, media culture and art. Founding director of the Cool Mediators Foundation - research and development organization specialized in interactive communication tools and social software design.

Tania worked for De Balie - Center for Culture and Politics (Amsterdam), Moscow organizations MediaArtLab, TV Gallery, Russian Institute for Cultural Studies, as well as a freelancer, and participated in international media culture events as well as network initiatives.

She has been teaching as a visiting lecturer at the Interactive Media and Environments Department of Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen, University of Groningen, DasArts - MA program for Advanced Studies in the Performing Arts of Amsterdam School of the Arts.

She publishes as a writer, editor and critic. She is co-editor and co-author of Debates & Credits. Media / Art / Public Domain, De Balie, Amsterdam, 2003, and Anthology of Russian Video Art, MediaArtLab, Moscow, 2002.

Rachel O’Dwyer
Rachel O’Dwyer is currently studying for an m.phil in music and media technologies in TCD. Her current research is interested in the relationship between mobile sonic technologies and forms of agency in urban non-places.

Our Friends at D-light studios are offering a full day to provide headshots courtesy of top photographer Agata Stoinska.

On Tuesday 21st April, Agata will be shooting beautiful black and white headshots for anyone in need of an updated image. All you have to do is contact the studio to book a slot anytime between 9:30 and 5:30 for a professional studio headshot. The images taken will be posted to an online gallery for you to choose your two favourite shots, and your images will be sent on disc to your agency.

This unique offer is available for only e100 to be paid on the day. This includes a portrait set-up photoshoot, two black and white images of your choice, digital processing, post production and a c.d. of your shots.

'REFLECTED LIGHT in Delhi'

Filmmaker and visual artist Marc-Ivan O’Gorman brings a retrospective of 10 years of non-narrative film & video work to the Mint Gallery, New Delhi, Thursday, 19th March to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as supported by Culture Ireland. The event, entitled 'Reflected Light', will also feature Dublin: The Movie, a multi-authored feature initiated by the Darklight Film Festival.

Since 2003, the award-winning filmmaker, has divided his time between Ireland and India. Last year he presented at the same venue, "Long Shots & Cutaways", an exhibition of photographs of urban phenomena from Dublin and Delhi, which was later exhibited in several venues in Ireland.

David O'Reilly wins Golden Bear in Berlin!

Darklight's 2008 Best Short Animation winner David O'Reilly for Please Say Something has won the Golden Bear at Berlin.

The jury fell in love with the film saying (it) “gave us lots of emotion, sensitivity and much to think about. A very humane story. With characters who made us laugh and feel sad at the same time.”

Now in its sixth year, The Imagine Cup is an annual competition aimed at third level students which encourages young people across the globe to apply their imagination, their passion and their creativity to technological innovations that can make a difference in today's world. It's a truly global competition focused on finding solutions to real world issues. To enter the short film strand of the competition, participants have to submit a three minute script or storyboard responding to the statement:

"Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems facing us today".

Irish finalists will be brought to Egypt to participate in the Imagine Cup World Finals, where they are required to make a short film inspired by their winning idea. With a prize of $8000 USD for the overall winning entry, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Darklight's role in the Imagine Cup competition is that of Mentor, Facilitator and Advocate. We think this is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring young filmmakers across the country to have their film made and win some big, big prizes. This competition isn't about technical ability or industry clout - it's about the power of ideas.

RTÉ Announces New Commission for web-based series

"StoryLand invites new and experienced drama production teams to pitch for a truly creative 6-part drama series to be webcast in March 2009.

Pilot first episodes of up to ten new drama series will be commissioned by RTÉ and the audience will decide, by voting on-line, which six will get to make a second episode.

The second episodes will again be voted on by the audience and four series will get to make a 3rd episode and so on until only one series gets to make all 6 episodes.

Each episode needs to be between 3 to 7 minutes long. If commissioned your budget is a maximum of eight thousand euro per ep, meaning you get nearly 50 grand for your series if you make it to the end.

The pilots will be up from March 2009, with the series webcast between then and September 2009.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get your ideas out there. We’re looking for good stories and interesting characters that will have immediate appeal to 20 somethings. We want as many creative ideas as we can handle so get your thinking caps on and get submitting!

Closing date for submissions is 12 noon 17 November 2008.

PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE LIGHT EXCHANGE

Hi Everyone,

Our friends in The Light Exchange are running a Pinhole Photography course in August over 2 weekends and there are still a few places left...

They Say:
"This is an opportunity for photography-lovers of all levels of experience to discover the beauty of pinhole images. Discover how any container-like object can be made into a camera and capture the world in a whole new way. You will make a camera obscura from cardboard tubing and tracing paper, then make a pinhole camera, develop your exposures in the darkroom and then scan your prints for further experimentation in Photoshop. We will also look at contemporary artists who use pinhole images in their work. All materials will be provided plus tea, coffee and biscuits!"

The course runs Sat + Sun, August 9th + 10th, Sat + Sun, August 16th + 17th, 10.30am - 3.30pm each day and costs €280. The booking deposit is €50.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the film "It is Fine, Everything is Fine!" featuring Crispin Glover will not be screened. However we will be re-screening Crispin Glover's Film "What Is It?". Tonight's performance will be preceded by a brand-new, never before seen BIG SLIDE SHOW.

Crispin Glover's remarkable film making début is described by the film-maker as "The adventures of a young man whose principle interests are snails, salt, a pipe, and how to get home. The Dublin Arts and Technology Association is proud to present DATA 2.0 No. 31 in collaboration with the Darklight Festival. It will be, as usual, an informal gathering of interested parties, open to the public, where a group of invited speakers will present their art/technology practice and work-in progress.

The DATA @ Darklight Special Event sees presentations by three international curators and cultural commentators followed by a talk and vj performance by Dutch media artist Karl Klomp.

Karl Klomp (Netherlands) is a media-artist, vj and theater technician with a research focus on live audiovisual expressions and interfacing. He has a fascination for glitch-art, visual glitch, video interruption or hyperkinetic audio visuals, dealing with video circuit bending, frame grabbing, hardware interfacing and max programming. He is also doing commissioned video hardware tools together with Tom Verbruggen (Toktek); they play live av performance mnk_toktek across the country. As part of Darklight, Klomp will give one of his audio/video circuit bending workshops, which often in collaboration with Gijs Gieskes via AllesLos. In 2005 Klomp collaborated with dePonk collective, international holding company of artists.

Wolf Lieser (Germany) is the director of the Gallery [DAM] in Berlin. Since 2003 the gallery has exhibited both early pioneers in digital art and contemporary practitioners. He is also the founder of the Digital Art Museum which aims to become “the worlds leading resource for the history and practice of digital fine art”. The online archive features artists working in the field from as far back as 1956.

Jane Tynan (UK) is a cultural studies lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art
and Design, University of the Arts, London. She has taught and published on contemporary art and design, cultural history and art and design education. She has contributed to exhibition catalogues, Film West, Circa, The Irish Times and Time Out (London).

THE BIG QUESTION: WHERE ARE THE SHORTS?
Those familiarising themselves with the 2008 Darklight Programme may have noticed the absence of comprehensive information on the short film programmes - a matter we'll be rectifying over the next day or two. Truth be told, we've been staggered and overwhelmed by both the qualty and quantity of fine shorts submitted for Darklight this year - over 1400 of them - and our viewing panels worked overtime to give every single one the consideration it deserved. Unfortunately, we're ultimately only able to screen a limited number, but hope to include additional titles in our touring programme and at occasional one-off events. The Bottom Line: If you haven't heard from us yet, we profusely apologise. And we'll be in touch.

SYMPOSIUM: LETTING IT ALL HANG OUT: PRIVACY VS. PUBLICITY IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD

For a new generation of 'digital natives' privacy is no longer a requirement. Web 2.0 has brought with it a transformation in how we view the need for privacy and engage with the public realm ? but at what cost? The discussion will be prefaced by a keynote address from Daniel J. Solove, Associate Professor of law at the George Washington University Law School, and the author of The Digital Person: Technology and Privacy In The Information Age. Chaired by solicitor and digital rights expert Caroline Campbell, the panel will also feature Irish blogging guru Damien Mulley.

SYMPOSIUM: WEB 3.0: WHERE NEXT FOR THE INTERNET?

TALK: KEN PERLIN: TRON AND BEYOND

We are delighted to be joined by effects wizard and Oscar winner Ken Perlin, Professor Of Computer Science at New York University; Ken worked on Tron, and since then has been developing new computer graphics techniques widely used in the motion picture special effects industry. Darklight '08 Update: The Budda Bag YouTube Salon Needs YOU!

The Budda Bag YouTube Salon returns to this year's Darklight by popular demand...

To put it simply: its DJing with YouTube.

And we're looking for participants.

The BUDDA BAG YOUTUBE SALON is set up for any user to vision mix between streaming YouTube videos. It is the perfect opportunity to showcase your own favourite online videos and an excuse to express yourself through the creation of a live mashup of audio and video, creating and rearranging works into a live video stream controlled by a single user that evades
rational analysis, but allowing subtle new meanings emerging from the chaos of Youtube's immense video library. The YOUTUBE salon is an experiment in a communal screening environment inspired by Web 2.0 (user controlled content), and might be a hint of how we enjoy our social cinema time in the future.

HOW TO USE THE BUDDA BAG YOUTUBE SALON

The salon will be set up much like any other screening room- one screen and an audience. The difference is that what appears on the screen will be streamed live over the internet from the YouTube video hosting website. Which videos are to be streamed are chosen by the participants, who will each be given a 30minute slot to show off their chosen videos. The participants will use a simple setup of three computers with outputs going through a vision mixer. The participant can then play one video, or one mixed with another while queuing up another.

Remember:
Each participant will be allowed a 30 minute time slot to show their YouTube videos. Each YouTube video should be fullscreened before playing. You may use the YouTube salon to show off your videos, or you can go crazy and mix videos up into a neverending mashup of audiovisual madness. The YouTube salon would especially suit DJs and visual artists with an interest in nu-media and technology.

PRACTICE
You can practice at home with your own computer and a broadband connection. Simply open up three browser windows, and point them all to YouTube. Start playing videos in each window, adjusting the volume of each to draw attention to each one.
Start clicking on random and not so random videos, throwing chaos into the mix. Begin to discover co-incidences and subtle hidden meanings. What you should have is a preview of the possibilites of the YouTube mashup.

Young Film-Makers/Actors Needed for RTE 2 Show. Deadline Mon 02/06/08

Still films are looking for young aspiring film-makers/actors/young people (aged 11-18) who are interested in making their own TV shows. Still Films and Wildwave are making a new series for RTE Two – SwededTV. Sweding is do it yourself filmmaking and the aim is to make your own cheap, funny versions of TV shows, using whatever you can get your hands on. Sweded TV will give you the chance to swede 3 popular TV shows and if you are lucky, your own version of these shows will be shown on TTV on RTE TWO and the Sweded TV website. We will provide the film crew.

So if you always wanted to be on TV and you have a sense of humour, this is your opportunity to show off your many talents and have fun too.

The Focus of the forum:
In recent years, the familiar boundaries between art and film have been called into question by practitioners, critics and educators. While artists seem increasingly drawn to the modes of exhibition and production that were traditionally associated with cinema, the film and television industries are currently undergoing a period of significant change, in which multiple and diverse structures of production and exhibition are emerging. Is it possible for artists and filmmakers to learn from each other, particularly in relation to low-budget projects? For example, do those coming from a visual art discipline have access to different resources, enabling them to produce work on much smaller budgets than is usual in the industry?

We talked to a number of artists and filmmakers who have crossed boundaries in terms of production and/or exhibition practices, with a focus on both the key differences and the emerging areas of collaboration. The panelists compared different approaches to working with scripts, actors and crews, and also discussed aspects of budgets and fund-raising strategies. They also considered the various challenges and opportunities that arise from showing work in diverse exhibition venues. Also discussed was the relationship between these developments and film/art education. To what extent have these changes in practice been addressed, or overlooked, by film and art educators?

Focus:

There are now a proliferation of alternative distribution avenues, what began with MMORPGs (e.g.World of Warcraft) has evolved into communities like Second Life, Youtube is having a huge impact on the availability of TV and film productions as well as user generated productions. Is this where culture is finding new audiences?

We will discuss the pros and cons surrounding publishing and distribution of short film that both established and emerging digital environments provide.

How has short film evolved as an artform in recent times, responding to digital production methods, desktop movie making, interactive narrative, access to audiences through networked communities and downloads, in terms of narrative content and creative practice? Are we seeing an end to the “calling card” type of short, are short films defining new genres?

How does this impact creative writing, shorter shorts, interactive narrative, what is the role of the writer in interactive media, game writing. What is expected of ‘content producers’ in 2007? Does this catchall term of the past 10 years reflect an attitude towards creative process and are we now seeing the emergence of a more curated network?

We will ask a number of short filmmakers, writers, curators and distributors to respond to these questions.

The workshop was a Wobbly Land Case Study with Brown Bag Films led by Matthew Darragh (Animation Director) and Ronan O Neil (Tech Supervisor of wobbly land)

Toon Boom is a leading software solution for animation studios to create high quality animations for film, video, television, games, web sites, mobile devices, training applications and more. Brown Bag Films, the Oscar-nominated Irish studio, spent a lot of time researching software before settling on Toon Boom. Most recently, they went into production with "Wobbly Land" using Toon Boom and kindly offered to give a workshop presentation at Darklight on how Toon Boom can be effectively used in the studio production process. This was an exciting and interesting workshop for anyone interested in cutting-edge animation.

Smith & Foulkes gave a wonderful talk at the Darklight Festival in association with Screen Training Ireland. Adam Foulkes and Alan Smith recent credits include the title sequence for Thunderbirds, and an animated "film within a film" for Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events. They have also directed several sketches for the BBC's animated comedy show Monkey Dust. For their work in television commercials they have won the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Lions, the Grandy at the 2005 ANDYS and the ITV award for best commercial.

DARKLIGHT FESTIVAL is Ireland’s premier festival for filmmakers, animators
and artists whose work explores the convergence of art, film and
technology.

Digital filmmaking techniques have become increasingly universal, they
have revolutionised contemporary filmmaking practice and contributed
hugely to the liberation of animation. In response to this the Darklight
programme has become focused on work that challenges; concepts, visual
aesthetic, narrative, access, methods of production and dialogue through
these contemporary filmmaking techniques.

Darklight exhibits work that pushes these boundaries and displays creative
excellence. Our mission is to nurture new talent and to create new
possibilities for the imagination.

SELECTION CRITERIA
-----------------------------------------

Eligible for entry are feature films, documentaries, all CG animation
(Flash, 3D etc.), experimental works, music videos, commercial work,
motion graphics, game sequences, live action shorts, student work, films
shot on camera phones and films from outreach and community projects.
There are no restrictions on genre, length or number of submitted works.

Panel One Discussion: AUDIENCES AND INTERFACES

The first panel included Dr. Maeve Connolly, Lisa Roberts, Michael McMahon, Steve McCormack and was chaired by Rod Stoneman.

Dr Connolly discussed the notion of technology advancing, while at the same time older technology is not so much obsolete as they are primed to be seen in a new light. Lisa Roberts discussed the development of the media through a smaller screen - our phones, our iPods, and how we have another avenue in which to tell and share stories. Michael McMahon addressed the notion of bittorrent and mass-media piracy.

Dr Maeve Connolly, lectures at DLIADT Dublin ( Ireland ), on the BA in Animation and the MA in Visual Arts Practices. Background in art practice and has a PhD on Irish film culture and the avant-garde.

Lisa Roberts, ( Blink.org , Pocket Shorts) - Perspectives on the impact of mobile technology on the future of film making and distribution.

Michael Mc Mahon, is an interactive media developer and manager with more than 10 years experience in the TV industry. Michael was technical manager at Endemol UK and UKTV Network. Current project, IPTV focused start-up company, Molotov Digital.

Stephen Mc Cormack , Wildwave Distribution, BitBuzz, Wildlight Channel, Perspective on Citizen Media, Poscasting Blogging, networked audiences.

Chaired by Rod Stoneman, is the Director of the Huston School . He has worked as Deputy Commissioning Editor in Independent Film and Video at Channel Four Television in London , and was Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Film Board from 1993-2003.

After a pleasantly musical opening, Prof. Vercoe discussed the motion of the evolving audio industry, and how the evolving technologies will shape the future of how not just how we will listen to music, but how we will buy it, how we will find it and even how we will play it, as well as the implications such ventures would have for the industry as it currently stands and other media.

Prof. Vercoe's main emphasis was on the speed at which the industry of 'push' - the more tradtional means of accessing music, such as CDs, shops and all the means we are used to - and 'pull' - the new means, such as downloading, p2p technologies and mp3s - are converging, and the necessity of understanding the use and power such a notion can hold.

Pocket Movies Challenge Winners Announced

Irish Movie Makers take the top honours!

The inaugural Nokia Darklight Pocket Movie Challenge has been won by Irish film-makers. Lorcan Finnegan and Ray Mongey were respectively awarded the top prizes in the professional and newcomer categories. Over 200 films from more than 10 countries were entered during the one month challenge, with representations in a wide variety of genres.

Lorcan Finnegan's production, "Changes", is a creative mix of illustration, photography and live-action that tells the story of two caterpillars wildly in love embarking on a journey of change.

Ray Mongey's animation, "A little closer to home", tells the story of a couple who are separated for the summer and how technology can make us feel a little closer to home.

The Panel 2: Alan Toner

Tying into earlier discussions, Mr Toner returned to the notion of p2p file sharing and internet broadcasts. He warned that even approaching from a non-commercial POV, one must keep an eye on costs, or risk losing their work. He discussed three essential criteria for networks and content: first, producing a competitive piece of media; second, robustness in case of technical failure and legal attack; third, availability.

The solutions developed have ironically come from the world of piracy. p2p has allowed for a grassroots movement of video distribution to sprout up through New Global Visions, particularly useful for people trying to find specific information files. E-Donkey is another superior program for such downloading, due to ensuring a persistent network presence. NGV has also made a big push in the Creative Commons, with over 150 films free and ready to download, in five languages, as well as numerous links to public domain materials and films. Emphasis was also placed on V2V, as a resource for incomplete projects which can be shared and re-edited.

He finished by echoing previous speakers hopes that although we hear continually about people using p2p being prosecuted, we're headed to a turning point where the conglomerates will adapt the system and it will eventually become the norm.

Q. If people are going to have their phone turned on and absorbed into an ad hoc network, there should be some sort of reward or benefit--

Tim Forde: The problem is that is a completely different business model, which is anathema to the existing companies.

Q. On the alternative business models, I'm in the process of putting a business plan together, but there are none that exist to my knowledge, if you'd know of any...

TF: I'm afraid not.

Q. What is the position of RTE making the archives available to download?

Anne O'Connor: We have actually something in place and started - we have a deal in place with the producers for materials, and so much of the material is already on digital already. On the website, we have clips etc - its not ideal, but it's a start. But we've started and we'll continue.

Q. The RTE website is vey disappointing - not a personal criticism - the audio archives, for example, are badly edited.

A O'C: Under the legislature, we cannot use public or commercial money on the website. The website can only be funded by itself - that means it has to make money, hence the advertisements, and the poor editing. I agree with you, but there are reasons.

Q. As I understand it, RTE automatically takes all of the rights for exploitation from Independent Producers, even on the website. Is there any plans to adopt the BBC modelof rights-sharing?

A O'C: All I can say is that RTE is undergoing a lot of change, particularly in the interactive sector. I am optimistic, however.

The Panel 2 - Tim Forde

Present in place of Linda Doyle, who was unfortunately unable to attend, Mr Forde discussed the nature of Ad Hoc (or self-configuring) Networks. A newer form, they require an alternate infrastructure to what's in place currently. Whereas existings systems are hierarchial and high cost with the users present solely at the end, Ad Hoc networks are composed of various technologies - TVs, computers, mobiles, etc. Far more flexible, they are designed to be mobile, thanks to wireless technology which is quickly increasing in quaity and range, to say nothing of a standardised international charge rate (unlikely the fudged standards of 3G). The absence of central control is relaced by a distributed decision making system, with each user allowed input.` The main joy, Mr Forde concluded on, is that it's a DIY effort - the network is yours, and you no longer need to depend on an inferior ISP.

Dr O'Connor was present to discuss the implications of new media for the IPUs (Independent Production Units), as RTE are required to spend a minimum amount therein. Circling around the notion of the digital home, we're faced with a multiplicity of methods of entertainment, a diversity which RTE must ultimately strive to serve, as a public service broadcaster, a factor strengthened by EU legislation. Dr O'Connor took us down along memory lane, from the early days of formation as Raidio Eireann in 1926 to the inclusion of television in 1966, the inevitable website, and that now RTE is gearing up to meet the new paradigm of self-personalisable content-on-demand. Dr O'Connor also shared information on the World Telecommunications Conference which will define the requirements RTE must match to meet international standards, while also breaking down RTE's plans for their existing and impending platforms, particularly the coming of 3G, DVB-H, digital TV & Radio, High Definition TV and podcasting (which is starting next month). Dr O'Connor closed by psing the question of what we, the public, think.

Q. How would the advertising companies enter into the likes of video blogging, torrenting and the like?

Steve McCormack: You're never going to get away from advertising. With v-blogging, the easiest way is to get a sponsor for example. It doesn't have to be an evil corporation - it can be a local coffee shop with WiFi. At the end of the day, everyone needs funding, and they will always find a way to get the ads in, in different forms.

Q. Why should someone bother to deal with a distributor when they can do it themselves with Bittorrent?

Michael McMahon: There's no reason you shouldn't. The easiest form of funding in the media is usually sponsorship and advertising. You need to have extremely compelling content to get people putting their hands in their pocket, but sponsorship is often easier to come by. It's one solution

Q. What do we stand to lose with the current growth of digital television?
Maeve Connolly: We;ve been seeing the audiences breaking up into niches for some time now, and the beauty of a broadcasting model that is diverse is that they'll find surprising new things they might not otherwise have had access to. What we may lose is that chance encounter, in favour of knowing the range and diversity.

Mr McMahon addressed the notion of bittorrent and mass-media piracy. High levels of bandwidth are expended daily on the illegal downloading of TV shows, from Lost to Coronation Street, a feat much easier in this heavily digitised world. Meanwhile, the digitisation has also spread out the audiences throught hundreds of channels as they search for their favourite niche shows - a thin spread which also pushes people to download rather than search. The advent of TiVo and the like has also stregthened the audience's desire to watch what they want to watch when they want to watch it, rather than at the convenience of a man in a suit far away. It is becoming increasingly apparent that a new method of distribution is needed to keep up with the audience, particularly for the sake of advertisers.

Ms Roberts discussed the development of the media through a smaller screen - our phones, our iPods, and how we have another avenue in which to tell and share stories. In essence, we need to learn a new language of story-telling which is, by default, more intimate, since the smaller screen negates the possiblty of a large widescreen shot in favour of closer, tighter shots. Also of importance is gauging the opinion of the audience and working in concert with what they want.

Dr Connolly discussed the notion of technology advancing, while at the same time older technology is not so much obsolete as they are primed to be seen in a new light - limitations are, in effect, no longer an issue. Furthermore, the playing field has been levelled, as the internet has allowed a huge ground for self-published work and developing a modern something not dissimilar to the indie writing scene that gave the world fanzines at the like.

Steve McCormack joined the proceedings to discuss the emerging and increasingly popular methods of communication and interaction opened up by the internet, breaking his discussion up into six easy-to-follow sections, as a primer for the n00bs and a refresher for the old hands.

1. Blogging - Why do people blog? What started out as a simple way for the common man to have a website, share links and goings-on with their friends has become an industry in itself, as corporate blogs emerged to share mission statements and brochures, while others became recognised enough to actively alter, expose and control public policies.
2. Podcasting - The audioblog. Anyone with a microphone and something to say can load their mp3 online, have it caught by an RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) Feed and dowloaded straight into your computer and or iPod. The format has been popularised by Apple and iTunes, and have become the new indie radio.
3. Web 2.0 - A term given to the new community-driven websites in which friends can interact easily, be they near or far apart - sites such as My Space, Flickr and Friendster. The sites are seemingly in permanent states of "Beta" development, which likely means they will always be worked upon and improved.
4. Web TV - Does exactly what it says on the tin, and now finally feasible as bandwidth and download speeds are less of an issue. Such sites include the daily alternative news show Rocketboom, iFilms and mania TV.
5. The Long Tail of Online Stores - While regular stores are limited by shelf space, and as a result the amount of stock they can carry, online stores have an infinite theoretical shelf space, and as a result can offer a far greater range of stock. The result is more obscure titles and works can become readily available, and profits are no longer limited to the more mainstream titles and hit-driven economy of old.
6. Mobile Videos - The slowly burgeoning range of mobile devices which bear visual fruits, be it a phone or iPod or PSP, whether you want to watch Lost or Kung Fu Hustle.

Benjamin Mako Hill on copyright in the technological environment

Benjamin Mako Hill made a name for himself in Free Software ad Open Source technologies, a background which makes him a natural choice to discuss the nature of copyright in an era of free information, piracy and p2p file sharing.

The Problem: In the digital context, information is defined by technology and copyright, the the emergent technologies are making the definition of ownership and copyright increasingly muddied and strained. How can the information be controlled and authorship retained? As the gap between the legal reality of copyright and the people's right to information are obvious and deeply problematic, Mr Hill stated. After all, if everyone eeverywhere had everything at no cost, what is the justification of depriving anyone of anything? It's an interesting moral and ethical question. More importantly, what are the solutions?

The first suggestion: Make copyright stronger - expand it to match current requirements and technology. But does that make much sense, when current laws are already so hard to enforce? Both copyright holders and pirates feel it is unlikely at best.

Second: Copyright reforms. The initial take on the notion would be to reduce length of cpyright, that certain goods would not be protected, the return of registration... But even if such a reform were feasible, Mr Hill pondered, it would be unfeasible. More likely would becompulsory licencing - or access on set terms. Such a movement would be more likely and easily executed, with taxes applied and appropriate monitoring systems.

Third: Piracy - ignore the distribution companies long enough, and eventually they would indeed go away, but not without severely undermining the production, and as a result, the point of the exercise.

Fourth, and most supported by Mr Hill, would be the development of an "alternative ecosystem". That is to say the development of a new system which abandons the older distribution and production models in favour of something which more closely follows modern technology, and utilising voluntary licencing schemes for consumers and modifiers, a la open source software. Such a project would follow the Four Essential Freedoms - to run software for any purpose; to study how the program works and make improvements; to give away copies; and to also give away and improvements added.

Furthermore, he posited, such notions should also be taken into consideration by people developing creative works - such as artists and writers - and not just those creating functional works, such as software developers. He also stated his hope to see an emphasis on the Creative Commons and the positive impact of collaboration.

When questioned on the nature of derivative works, Mr Hill expressed favour for them, taking the obvious example of Disney, who frequently use stories in the pulbic domain for their movies. He was also asked about the notion of sampling in music genres such as hip-hop, to which Mr Hill mused upon how the form lost something as its sampling was crushed by legislation, in spite of the genre having a long-standing prior history.

When asked how you could stop people from altering software, he replied that it would require the alteration of the licence, but this would also become a legal minefield as that could be construed as a breach of licence itself, with the most recent modifier in a position to sue if they so wished. In closing, he was also asked how sustainable production would be in open source production without patronage, he admitted it's a difficult situation. One potential solution would be a basic amount of capital would have to be received before the software would become freely available to everyone, but he admitted this is only one possibility.

He centered his thesis on the seven technologies driving the convergence:
1. Audio coding - how music is stored and compressed, with the desire for as much compression in size and complexity in the track as is possible, copyright protection and how the mp4 format fits into this.
2. Time-caching.
3. Interfaces - how we access the music.
4. Network Technology and Infrastructure.
5. Viral communications - a superior means of sending and receiving information than traditional telecommunication networks.
6. Cultural Community Metadata - how, rather than being blanket-bombed by recommendations and advertising (often via collaborative filters), data-mining and language processing can better gauge what we would want to know about.
7. Embedded Processing - how specific processors can work together for superior playback, and the porting core technology of MPEG4 to low cost technology.

He closed his address with two truth-laden statements: first, that technology has created higher consumer expectations; and second, that consumers have shown they will move forward with the technology with or without the industry.
